Over 600 players converged on Palmerston North over the last week for the New Zealand Indoor Bowls Championships.

The small team of South Canterbury players continued with their good form.

Allan Gibson, playing with Lesley Richards from Mangatainoka, had qualified for post-section play in the pairs when The Courier went to print last week and they went on to make the last 16.

The triples was played over the next two days and Allan Gibson, Carol Dawson and David Shand played consistent good bowls over 10 games to win gold in the masters triples and with Manawatū player Linda Joyce, they got to the quarterfinals over the weekend in the fours.

Neville and Ruth Gould and Debra Ruffell teamed up with Kylie Gould from Christchurch and qualified for post-section play in the open fours.

A highlight of the tournament was David Shand being joint-winner with Marilyn Baskiville from Auckland of the Rayner Trophy for achieving the most points in the masters section.

With winning the masters triples and getting to the quarterfinals in the fours and singles he had the same points as Marilyn who won the masters fours and was third in the singles.

South Canterbury were already holding this trophy as Allan Gibson and Christine Shand had won it last year.

Debra Ruffell was rewarded for her hard work this season by being named as skip of the South Island women’s triples team when they play the North Island in Whakatāne on August 1.

We have players in Whanganui this week playing the Clubs NZ Men’s Nationals.

On Saturday there is the masters fours zone qualifier tournament for the Alan Reid Trophy beginning at 10am and the winner will represent South Canterbury at the eastern zone play-offs in July. — Carol Dawson, SC Indoor Bowls
