Likely to face charges

A motorcyclist who was taken to Timaru Hospital for treatment following a police pursuit in Waimate on Tuesday is likely to face charges.

Sergeant Kevin Reynolds, of Waimate, said a patrol tried to stop the motorcyclist about 7.45pm on John St as they believed he had been forbidden from driving.

However, the motorcyclist sped off.

Within a matter of minutes the 21-year-old Waimate man collided with a ute travelling down High St.

Police believe the man's injuries included a broken ankle.

Sgt Reynolds said the motorcyclist was travelling at more than 50km and the pursuit itself lasted for only about 400m.

He said charges were likely to follow and the man was lucky not to have suffered more serious injuries.

''It could have been a lot worse.

''When collisions with a motorcyclist and a vehicle [occur] it's the motorcyclist that comes off worse.''

The driver of the ute was shaken but uninjured.
