The council announced Cr O’Connor died suddenly early yesterday.
He had been a Pareora-Otaio-Makikihi ward councillor since 2013 and was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2018 in recognition of his service to seniors, local government and journalism.
In a statement, Waimate District Mayor Craig Rowley said the council was mourning the loss of a respected colleague and friend.
"His absence will be felt deeply — not just within council chambers, but across the entire district," Mr Rowley said.
