Post shops set to close

Two of South Canterbury’s community post shops are set to close.NZ Post confirmed the closures on Tuesday after the move was signalled in October last year.

The affected South Canterbury shops are NZ Post Marchwiel at 255 Selwyn St, Timaru and NZ Post Washdyke at 184 Hilton Highway.

The outlets are among 142 closing nationwide from May.

NZ Post general manager consumer Sarah Sandoval said in a statement the current retail network was bigger than required for today’s mail volumes.

‘‘While these changes will see NZ Post remove services from 142 urban retail partner stores nationwide in 2026, the remaining network of 567 stores will still be significantly larger than any New Zealand supermarket or bank branch network. In fact, 90% of Kiwis living in urban areas will still be within 4km of an NZ Post store.’’

NZ Post has indicated they will not be initiating any changes to rural stores at this time.
