Braving cold conditions and heavy rain, dozens of onlookers watched the scene unfold.
At least three ambulances were also at the scene, but it was not known if anyone was injured in the fire.
Police and the fire rescue command unit were also in attendance.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand was called at 9.25pm.
