Eagles holding Milton golf tournament

It may be a fun 18 holes for players but Otago's disabled children will be the winners at a tournament being held at Milton this weekend.

The Otago Eagles Golfing Society will hold its annual South Otago Halberg Trust day at the Toko Golf Club tomorrow.

Proceeds go to the work of the Halberg Trust sport opportunity programme and Halberg Trust activity fund in Otago.

The programme's goal is to link disabled children to sporting and recreational opportunities.

The invitation-only event is one of 27 Eagles golf tournaments being held around the country this year to raise money for the work of the Halberg Trust.

The trust was set up in 1963 by Sir Murray Halberg to honour sporting excellence through the Halberg Awards and to link people with a disability to sport and active leisure in their communities.

The focus is on children aged between 5 and 18 who have any physical or intellectual disability and need adaptive equipment or help to pay for sports lessons.

The Eagles Golfing Society has supported the Halberg Trust since 1969.

Last year, it raised more than $161,000, lifting its total contribution to almost $3.3 million.

All funds raised at tomorrow's event at Milton will go back to helping those with a disability in the Otago region.

Grants given in Otago in the past year have been for swimming lessons, customised trikes, bike modifications, skiing lessons, tandem bikes and dance lessons.
