About 30 people attended the event, including trustees from the Foundation, with proceedings concluding in the planting of a kōwhai tree on the centre’s forecourt lawn.
The tree was dedicated in gratitude to the Foundation, whose generosity provided new and upgraded ambulances for St John branches across New Zealand, including two for the Balclutha service.
The gathering also marked the completion of recent refurbishments to the centre’s kitchen, dining and bathroom facilities.
The James Urquhart Foundation, now in the process of being closed down, was established in memory of Kaitangata-born James Urquhart.
A Foundation representative shared a biography with those present to highlight the life and values of the man behind the enduring legacy.
"Born in the small town of Kaitangata in South Otago, James Urquhart’s story began with humble roots and a heart full of promise," the representative said.
"From his early days at Kaitangata Primary and South Otago High School, he carried a strong work ethic and a deep connection to the land.
"He had a natural curiosity and a love for farming, which shaped his grounded, generous spirit but it was in banking that he found his professional path ... Always ready to lend a hand, he became a trusted figure wherever he went, guided by a quiet willingness to go where he was needed most."
Attendees said the ceremony was a fitting tribute to a man remembered for his generosity and community-minded spirit.
"The James Urquhart Foundation has been very generous to St John which is beneficial to all New Zealand, particularly here in Clutha, where we’re proud to plant the kowhai in his memory," Selwn Cardno, of Balclutha Hato Hone St John said.
