Clutha District Council is closing some transfer stations next month, in an effort to save money.
A spokeswoman said transfer stations in Clinton, Lawrence, Milton, Owaka and Tapanui would be temporarily closed from March 9, until the end of the financial year.
A review would take place to consider extending or reversing the closure at that point.
The spokeswoman said the transfer stations generated a net loss of more than $110,000 each year, and were located in towns that already had kerbside collection.
Transfer stations in Maclennan/Papatowai, Beaumont and Taieri Mouth will remain open.
