The backdraft of an open fire is thought to have caused the fire which destroyed an accommodation wing behind the Catlins Inn, in Owaka, on Tuesday night.

The Clutha Licensing Trust's facility was trading as usual yesterday while trust management, inn management and fire assessors studied the damage.

Trust chief executive David Kenny said a three-bedroom managers' flat and two accommodation units were destroyed. No-one was inside the building at the time.

Mr Kenny said assessors believed the backdraft from an open fire ignited curtains, which accelerated the blaze.

The inn managers were being housed at a motel across the road from the establishment until a more permanent arrangement could be made.
