The Balclutha Floral Art Club will celebrate 45 years of floral art in South Otago with a floral theatre next Friday.

A floral theatre was the spectacular art of flower-arranging on stage, creating a pleasing audio-visual display providing entertainment, education and stimulation, club president Allison Dempster said.

Professional florist and floral art designer Francine Thomas, of Tauranga, will present the show called "Element of Surprise" .

A story would unfold while Ms Thomas created her designs from fresh flowers and other plant material.

Some of the designs created in Balclutha by Ms Thomas will be auctioned at the end of the show, Mrs Dempster said.

"Francine is one of New Zealand's leading floral art designers. I like the individuality of her designs - she has a bubbly personality and is very entertaining."

Ms Thomas will arrive in Balclutha on Wednesday night and will spend Thursday and Friday creating designs and her set before the theatre on Friday night.

Mrs Dempster said Ms Thomas would bring with her most of the plant material required for the arrangements, including subtropical gerberas, cymbidiums, phalaenopsis, lilies and other highly-coloured blooms and foliage, much of which was not common in Otago and Southland.

Club members will also be gathering colourful foliage for the theatre.

The two-hour show was "something quite different" and would feature music and lighting effects.Supper would follow.

Proceeds from the floral theatre will go towards providing a tutor to hold a workshop in Balclutha for members, the public and other interested groups at a later date.

The event will be held in the Balclutha War Memorial Hall on Friday, May 25, starting at 7.30pm. .
