Marilyn Sayers comes from a teaching background and this is expected to prove more than useful in her new role as marketing manager for Telford Rural Polytechnic.

The Southlander has had links with the land since she was young and is relishing the chance to help young people gain land-based skills.

Mrs Sayers started in her new job at the end of April but has hardly been at Telford in her first three weeks.

Travel is a big part of the job and Mrs Sayers has already visited Whakatane, Masterton and Rotorua, among other North Island places, pushing the Telford message.

Her previous jobs have involved administration, health and safety as well as educational positions.

More recently, she worked for a coalmining company and a major sheep and beef station.

Mrs Sayers said the Telford position was too good an opportunity to pass up.

It gave her the chance to visit schools and encourage young people to consider farming as a career the travelling part of the role also suited her.

Mrs Sayers was keen to visit and meet as many teachers as possible and promote all the good things that Telford and the farming sector offered.
