Up-market demand for chalets

Visitors to the Catlins are calling out for self-contained high-end accommodation and one operator has already responded.

The first of five purpose-built honeymoon chalets was transported to the McLean Falls Holiday Park, near Cathedral Caves, recently, in a move operators Paul and Lynn Bridson said was responding to the demands of the growing number of visitors to the Catlins already this summer.

The chalets were built by an Owaka company and the first was brought on to the site 12 days ago.

Mr Bridson said the chalets would complement its eatery, the Whistling Frog Cafe, and was an indication of increasing demand from visitors.

The one-bedroom units have a rimu kitchen and floors made from locally sourced recycled rimu.

Leather furniture and carpets complete the luxury feel to the chalets, which also boast their own covered deck and balcony.

"Indications and recent Catlins research [show] that the travelling public are looking for the comfort and privacy offered by this style of accommodation in the Catlins," the Bridsons said.

They said there was growing demand from honeymooners, longer-term, local getaway travellers and "grey power" travellers "discovering this forgotten corner of New Zealand".

Mr Bridson said bookings were already strong for the chalets.
