Balclutha Primary School principal Paddy Ford rewarded his pupils for raising more than $1000 for World Vision by dying his hair green and purple yesterday.

Mr Ford said while he was "blackmailed" into dyeing his hair to raise the money, it was all in fun and it was for a good cause.

"My staff are just so supportive," he said.

"It was a suggestion I couldn't refuse."

Teacher Christine Harrington said the school was banking about $1200 yesterday, and still waiting for half the returns to come in. She expected the final tally to be about $2000.

Mr Ford's new hairstyle did not look out of place on the school grounds yesterday, as the school also held "crazy hat and hair day" to raise money for the Balclutha school's netball team's uniforms.

It was not clear yesterday how much money had been raised.
