Duck shooters and others using firearms near residential areas are being urged to think twice after one shooter got too close for comfort on Monday.

Senior Sergeant Richard Whitmore said campers and staff at the Balclutha Camping Ground became concerned for their safety after some shot fired by a man shooting on the bank of the Clutha River landed in the camping ground.

Police were called to the riverbank about 5.20pm and a man was warned by police.

Some shot had fallen in the camping area and visitors were worried they were in the firing line.

The man had been duck shooting by himself on the riverbank.

Sen Sgt Whitmore said anyone using firearms should be aware of the dangers associated with them, especially when using them close to residential and built-up areas.

The condition of a passenger involved in a single car crash near Beaumont over the weekend remains serious.

Snr Sgt Whitmore said the car lost control and slid down a bank before hitting a tree about 11pm Saturday.

He said the driver suffered whiplash and minor injuries, but the front-seat passenger suffered serious abdominal injuries.

Foggy conditions at the time meant both were driven to Milton by ambulance before being flown to Dunedin by helicopter.

Snr Sgt Whitmore said this and other recent crashes in the district should serve as a timely reminder for all drivers to take care on the roads, which can become greasy and icy very quickly.

Police chasing a person believed to have stolen three vehicles within the space of hours on Monday are still looking for the last vehicle he drove off in.

Senior Sergeant RichardWhitmore said the three thefts all happened in the Manuka Gorge and Waitahuna area within about two hours andthey were linked.

The series of events started about 5.20am on Monday when the burnt-out remains of a Toyota Corona vehicle reported stolen from Dunedin were found near the Manuka Gorge.

Soon afterwards, police received reports a Honda quad motorcycle had been taken from a nearby farm.

That motorcycle was later found crashed in a ditch near a Waitahuna farm and a vehicle from that farm was then stolen.

Snr Sgt Whitmore said police had yet to find the third vehicle, a blue Toyota hatchback, registration NP 4533.

It has a black bike-carrier rack on the back.
