SOHS pupils push for a youth centre

A youth centre in the heart of Balclutha is the dream of a group of South Otago High School (SOHS) pupils who are close to making it a reality.

The small but enthusiastic group, led by Balclutha-based youth worker Daniel Maze, is forming a trust, made up of adults and youths, to administer a centre which will be open to SOHS pupils from 3pm to 6pm on weekdays.

The project is part of Mr Maze's leadership development programme, Making A Difference (Mad).

Mr Maze said most of the work involved in setting up the trust, finding a base and operating the facility would be left to the youths, allowing them to gain a feeling of "ownership" of the project.

The group had identified a potential site in Balclutha, and it was negotiating a lease agreement.

A recent survey of SOHS pupils revealed overwhelming support for the youth centre, and indicated many of those surveyed would use it.

Of the 330 pupils polled, 261 (79%) believed there was need for a Balclutha youth centre.

Two-thirds would use the centre, with Fridays being the most popular day.

The same numbers would be prepared to pay a small admission charge each time they visited, to keep the centre running.

Most opposed paying an annual membership fee.

The group has formed a legal entity so it can start applying for funds, and is fundraising through raffles.

It is still accepting donations of furniture and other items that could be used in the centre.

Two pupils, Meghean Bennet and Tommy Mills (both 15) said they were excited to be part of the project, and they were keen to see the centre open sometime in October.
