Thrills, chills and festive delights await discovery in West Otago this month, as a local group redoubles its Christmas spirit on a local nature trail.

Following a successful first outing last year, the West Otago Christmas Trail has returned to Tapanui’s Whiskey Gully — with a few unexpected extras.

Local resident Jann Robertson brought together a group of like-minded mums for the first time last year to enhance the short nature trail at the edge of the Blue Mountains, after being inspired by a similar attraction in Riverton.

Committee member Rachel Hanna said the free, family walk had proven "hugely" popular, and had returned "bigger and better", running until December 27.

"We have several enhancements this year, and just more lights, surprises and sparkle overall.

"There’s a special thrilling surprise at the walk’s outset, which we won’t spoil, a remembrance tree for people to remember loved ones, a kids’ scavenger hunt with a lolly reward and we have a visitor’s book so we can get an idea of who’s enjoying it."

Mrs Hanna said pallet trees had been given to local school groups to decorate, forming part of the trail alongside works big and small from local creatives.

"There are delightful surprises and little bits of Christmas magic round each corner. People are obviously enjoying it as we’re getting great feedback in our visitors’ book."

She said several international visitors were among those commenting, as Whiskey Gully was used as a freedom camping site.

Yesterday, those included Taiwanese friends Yayar Hsiao and Yee Chen, who said they had never seen anything like the trail in their global wanderings.

"It’s brilliant, really beautiful. I love how the community and children are all involved," Miss Chen said.

Mrs Hanna said the trail had been a "whole community" effort.

"We’re grateful to all our sponsors and supporters — and our very patient fairy light hangers."
