Exploding fly spray can puts hole in roof

An automatic fly spray can caused alarm for emergency services when it exploded and went through a Southland property’s roof this morning.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman confirmed staff received a "very unusual" call regarding the blast on Margery St, Riverton about 11am.

Two crews from Riverton and one from Thornbury attended the scene and checked the roof space for fire upon arrival — to no avail.

Firefighters left the site once it was cleared of any risk.

It was not clear if anyone was in the property at the time, however, no injuries were reported.
