Fire site being monitored

A Fire and Emergency crew remained at the site of a fire yesterday - to keep an ''eye on the situation''.

More than two hectares of land was burned before Southland firefighters contained a large fire near Mossburn on Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called to a burn-off ''that jumped a fire- break'' on Taylor Rd at West Dome Station just before 3.30pm on Tuesday, a Fire and Emergency spokesman said.

The fire, in mixed vegetation, was brought under control by around 40 firefighters from Mossburn, Lumsden, Dipton, Balfour, Garston and Athol.

Two helicopters, four appliances, and three tankers were used.

Mossburn Chief Fire Officer Lance Hellewell said the fire had reached a block of pine trees before being brough under control about 6.30pm, and no other property was destroyed.

The wind had ''got up significantly'' by the time the burn-off got out of control, he said.

Landowners needed to be mindful of the weather
conditions when lighting fires, he said.

''In this area the weather can change from being a mild, gentle day, to a good breeze in a matter of minutes so they just need to be aware of that when they go to light.''
