Donovan Primary School principal Peter Hopwood, of Invercargill, has the support of all 450 pupils, as well as teachers, who dressed in bright colours to represent the bright future teachers want for their pupils.

The primary school was one of many around Otago and Southland to participate in a national community day of action yesterday to rally support for the upcoming NZEI strike action.

Teacher Janene Butt said the day was about sending a positive message in a way the children would understand.

"It’s about getting messages into homes and into our community, so everyone understands what’s happening and where the campaign is leading."

Action day ideas included posting messages on social media, writing letters to media editors, organising events, stalls and displays at school to promote the campaign and handing out leaflets to parents at the school gate.

Primary school teachers and principals across New Zealand will stage a full-day strike on August 15 to send a message to the Government about the need for better investment in education.
