A Riverton man with moderate injuries was taken to Southland Hospital by ambulance after a water-related incident near Howells Point, Riverton, about 2.20pm today, emergency services said.

It is understood the man was walking at the beach, near the Rocks Highway, and may have been looking for shellfish in shallow water when he apparently fell and hurt himself.

He was initially helped by a friend and other members of the public, and was revived after apparent breathing difficulties.

St John Ambulance staff and volunteer firefighters attended, and a St John Ambulance spokeswoman said the person had been transferred to hospital by ambulance.
