Invercargill's coin-operated parking meters will soon be put to rest.

Invercargill City Council approved its annual plan this week which included an upgrade of on-street parking meters across the city.

Invercargill City Council roading manager Russell Pearson said the city had 750 coin-operated parking meters, which would cost about $800,000 to replace.

"We get feedback that people no longer have coins, and new means of paying, including by app, would be helpful."

He said council was gathering information on replacement alternatives and would decide which better suited residents and tourists.

"We are still working through the options, as each has strengths, but pay by plate does offer good options. The use of an app is also very likely."

However, customers who prefer to use coins need not worry as they will remain a payment option.

"Kiosks will still accept coins as one means of payment, along with credit cards."

Council staff had planned to start replacing individual parking meters this year, but the time frame still was unknown.
