An Invercargill mother and daughter are stepping up to support schools and families in need.

Donagh Booth and her daughter Maddison started The Shoe Booth early last month via social media.

The charity group aims to supply free, good-quality shoes to members of the public.

The duo had received about 150 pairs donated by people in the community.

"We’ve given away 90 pairs of shoes so far," Maddison said.

Some of the donations came from Winton and Gore and they had also received a monetary contribution from as far north as Auckland.

"It has been quite overwhelming and people have been great and it has been easy for us," Mrs Booth said.

"But we don’t want it to stop there — we would like for people to keep bringing in their donations."

The pair had given out two boxes of shoes to Ranui Kindergarten and Te Wharekura o Arowhenua, and were set to give out more to Waverley Park School and Verdon College.

They were aware some people could not get to their location in Gala St and recognised schools provided the perfect opportunity to help families.

"It’s within our future plans to set up some type of transport for families who can’t get here but we realised schools were most in contact with families," Mrs Booth said.

Other plans included offering uniforms, school bags and jackets, and also to start up a hire service for school ball dresses, gowns and suits.

"Our ideas have been growing and growing and we would like to expand to surrounding towns such as Gore and Riverton."

If schools or families in the area were in need they could get in contact with The Shoe Booth via social media, she said.
