An airport training exercise was held in Invercargill yesterday through thunder, rain and hail.

Invercargill Airport general manager Nigel Finnerty said training was undertaken regularly.

"Our guys train every day and do various scenarios ... this is one we do biannually with all the emergency services around Invercargill."

The training was held yesterday afternoon and the entire emergency response function was tested, he said.

It involved the police, St John and Fire and Emergency New Zealand.

"It’s an aircraft having a hard-landing, skidding off the runway into the grass."
