Southland driver approached police car at 188kmh

A Southland man has been disqualified from driving after he sped toward a parked police car while doing 88kmh over the speed limit.

Charged with driving at a dangerous speed, Ross Douglas Murray (52) appeared in the Gore District Court on Wednesday before Judge Callaghan.

The sentence handed down was a $700 fine plus $130 court costs.

He was also disqualified from driving for six months.

The incident took place on June 30, outside of Edendale in Southland on the Edendale Wyndham Rd - a 100kmh limit stretch of road.

Equipped with a speed detection device, the police occupying the vehicle activated the rear facing antenna which clocked the speed of the car at 188kmh.

The police then activated their sirens and lights and the speeding car, which was the only other car on the road, stopped.

Police heard Murray's explanation that the car was running poorly "and he just wanted to clear it out."
