Strong winds which buffeted Invercargill yesterday afternoon brought down powerlines and uprooted trees.

The damage included an old macrocarpa tree blown over on to railway tracks near St Mary's Basilica, at the corner of Tyne and Nith Sts, about 4pm.

Firemen could be seen using chainsaws to clear the line.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift supervisor Lyn Crosson said powerlines had also been brought down in Kennington.

She said there had been one report of a roof lifting off a garage.

There were no reports of anyone being injured.
