Strong winds on way for South

Prepare to batten down the hatches again - the MetService warns severe gales gusting over 100kmh are likely to hit Southland and parts of Otago early next week.

A MetService spokeswoman said a strong "disturbed'' west to northwest flow would cover the country between Sunday and Wednesday, likely to bring heavy rain to Fiordland and Westland.

Late on Monday and early Tuesday, there was a low chance of severe gale northwesterlies for a time about Fiordland and Southland.

However, on Tuesday and Wednesday, the chances of severe westerly gales would increase for southern Fiordland, Stewart Island, and coastal Southland and Clutha, she said.

Winds would average about 90kmh, but could gust well in excess of 100kmh, she said.

Despite the wet and windy weather, maximum temperatures were expected to reach highs in the double digits.
