4.4 quake rattles Wanaka

Hundreds of people have reported feeling a shallow earthquake that struck south of Wanaka.

GeoNet said the 4.4-magnitude tremor hit at 11.21am today, about 25km south the tourist town.

It was 5km deep and was likely to have been widely felt in the region.

Social media users in Clyde described the quake as "a big jolt", while others said the quake was "short and sweet".

Geonet had earlier classified it as a strong quake but has since downgraded it to a light quake.

The majority of the more than 650 people who reported feeling it, described it as a light or weak intensity quake.
