About 400 cyclists congregated in downtown Wanaka yesterday afternoon to show their support for the development of an active transport network throughout the town.

In the draft 10-year plan, the Queenstown Lakes District Council has set aside $1.5million to go towards the network.

It comes after a network masterplan was unveiled to the public last November by the Active Transport Wanaka Collective.

Spokesman Simon Telfer said while it was pleasing to see money go towards the plan, it was not nearly enough, and the fact construction of the network was not due to start until 2022 was a concern.

He believed the turnout at the mass ride yesterday showed just how much Wanaka people loved biking.

The collective  is midway through making a submission on the draft plan.
