Work has started on the construction of the McDonald’s restaurant in Wānaka’s Three Parks development.

McDonald’s initial proposed site near the entrance to Wānaka was turned down after a resource consent hearing in late 2024.

The proposal was rejected because its location did not sit correctly within district plan provisions.

More than 90% of the 366 submissions were against the proposed restaurant.

The Three Parks location was approved in January by the Queenstown Lakes District Council, which said the site was located in a retail area and all effects had been mitigated. At the time, McDonald's said it hoped to have the new restaurant opened early in 2027. — Allied Media
