NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) crews complete annual work on State Highway 6 between Hāwea and Makarora clearing rock from surrounding slopes that may pose a hazard to road users.
An NZTA spokesman said the work involved use of techniques such as “airbagging”, where inflatable industrial airbags were placed directly into fractures and cracks in the rock face and inflated to pry
unstable material loose.
Last Thursday, about 250 tonnes of material was released on to the road.
The work was scheduled to continue through to this weekend. A 30kmh temporary speed restriction was in place around the work sites and road users were stopped when rocks were being released, the spokesman said.
