The Queenstown Lakes District council will receive a recommendation from the outgoing Wanaka Community Board that it consult more and give the next board more support and integration within council.

At the last meeting of the community board this triennium, held at the Lake Hawea Community Centre this week, the board was asked to consider whether any amendments were necessary to the current governance protocol agreement which sets out its terms of engagement with the council

Board chairman and Queenstown Lakes District councillor Quentin Smith said "on paper it was a reasonably sound document with our delegations and our terms of reference but I do express some concern that we haven't had every opportunity to do that.

"I would not suggest we have been consulted on all significant policy and planning documenting for instance and I am not sure we have been able to agree on levels of service for the Wanaka ward.

"I hope that the next board is given more integration and support within council and is able to fulfil its role more clearly," he said.

Outgoing councillor Ross McRobie said he thought the agreement had worked well since it was revamped into the governance protocol in 2016 but suggested it should be discussed every six months rather than at the end of the triennium, as directed in the protocol document.

"That would make it a true partnership," he said.
