An Albert Town man has been accused of a series of "mindless" arson attacks on cellphone towers in the region over the past few months.
The 41-year-old man, who in the Queenstown District Court yesterday was remanded in custody by consent, will appear before a judge in the Alexandra District Court on Tuesday.
He is facing five charges of intentionally damaging a cellphone tower or telecommunications infrastructure by fire, which relate to incidents in the Wānaka area and Lindis Pass since early July.
He has also been charged with two firearms offences.
In a media statement, Acting Detective Sergeant Julie Bowman said the arsons posed a serious risk to the community.
"We are thankful that no-one was hurt as a result of the actions of this individual.
"This is a good result for our community, and they should feel confident we will always work to hold to account those who carry out such mindless attacks."
Acting Det Sgt Bowman thanked the Wānaka community for its assistance in the police’s investigations.
"Police take these matters seriously as they have, and continue to have, a significant impact on our community," she said.
