A fruit picker who allegedly caused a crash which left two people dead will appear in court next month.

Feng Liu (29) was due to appear in the Alexandra District Court this morning charged with two counts of careless driving causing death and one causing injury.

However, the case was administratively adjourned until March 17.

Both Pei Lu Chan and Yee Fun Pang died at the scene of the smash in Makarora-Lake Hawea Rd (State Highway 6) last week.

Two others were transported to Dunstan Hospital with minor injuries but only one was the subject of a charge.

Emergency services said they were called to the scene, where the vehicle had collided with a pine tree, at 10.20pm on Thursday.

Careless driving causing death carries a maximum penalty of three months' imprisonment or a fine of $4500.
