Seventy-two percent of the Wanaka public surveyed recently would like some of the town centre's streets closed to vehicles.

However, there is a lack of unanimity over which streets.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council has released responses it received from its experimental closure to vehicles of parts of Ardmore and Helwick Sts near the lakefront.

Of 1071 responses, 31% supported the closure of Ardmore St from Lakeside Rd to McDougall St, 19% from Lakeside Rd to Dungarvon St, 22% from Helwick St to Dungarvon St, and 20% did not support closure.

On car parking, 71% supported relocating parking away from the lakefront.

A proposal to join Pembroke Park to the lakefront, which would mean closing part of Ardmore St, was supported by 60%.

A "safe cycle network" was supported by 90% and the introduction of a public bus service by 82%.

Wanaka residents made up 88% of those surveyed and 55% were over 45 years old.
