A bright start from Wānaka FC was extinguished by a red card last Saturday, resulting in a 9-0 home defeat to Cashmere Technical FC.
Wānaka started superbly as underdogs, controlling the early phase of the game and showing confidence and intent in the opening 15 minutes.
Despite Wānaka’s strong start, it was Cashmere who struck first, with a well-placed long ball setting up Garbhan Coughlan to give Cashmere the lead against the run of play.
Wānaka continued to play with composure and belief, but the match turned dramatically when Danny Heemskerk was shown a straight red card.
Reduced to 10 men, Wānaka struggled to reorganise, and Cashmere capitalised ruthlessly.
In a punishing 10-minute spell, the visitors exposed gaps and raced to a commanding 6–0 lead by halftime.
The second half saw more balanced phases, with both sides enjoying periods of possession and attacking play.
However, Cashmere remained clinical and added a further three goals to complete a comprehensive 9-0 victory.
It was a tough result for Wānaka to take, with the red card proving the decisive moment in the contest.
Cashmere’s sharpness in front of goal and ability to exploit the extra space made the difference on the day.
Wānaka FC now head to Christchurch to play Christchurch United on Saturday.
