A Wānaka steering committee has been formed to establish a new shared housing facility for older people in the area.
The group aims to establish an Abbeyfield house, to cater for 12 to 14 people aged over 65.
There are 14 Abbeyfield houses operating in New Zealand, including one in Frankton.
Lead steering committee member Stephanie Fieldsend, of Wānaka, said a Wānaka house would operate along the same lines.
The Abbeyfield housing model had often been likened to flatting for older people, she said.
Residents lived independently, with their own studio room, and came together to share meals prepared by a housekeeper/cook in a family-style environment.
An Abbeyfield house would provide a much-needed housing option for older people in the town, she said.
"Abbeyfield houses are an affordable rental option for people whose only income is superannuation. As there is no capital entry charge, it is ideal for those who have rented all their life and/or have limited savings.
"Although Wānaka does have retirement villages, they require considerable financial outlay and are not the whole answer."
Abbeyfield New Zealand executive officer Susan Jenkins said Abbeyfield was founded as an answer to loneliness and isolation in later life.
"New houses are developed through a collaborative approach between a local development group and the national Abbeyfield organisation," she said.
Once built, a house was managed by local volunteers, so establishing a strong local committee was an important step.
The Abbeyfield housing model was developed in the United Kingdom in the 1950s and has been operating in New Zealand since 1992.
Abbeyfield houses were self-funding once established, with the rent covering operating costs, Ms Fieldsend said. Each house was managed by a local Abbeyfield committee, made up of volunteers.
Their contribution ensured the rent remained affordable and the residents were well supported.
All Abbeyfield entities were registered charities.
The steering group would investigate local need, identify suitable sites for the house, and start fundraising and applying for grants.
