A fresh rockfall on the north side of the Meybille Bay slip this morning has slowed down rock removal from the site and kept the Coast Road, State highway 6, closed for another day.

"State highway 6 will not be reopening today between Punakaiki and Charleston," New Zealand Transport Agency regional performance manager Pete Connors said at midday.

A further update would be provided around midday tomorrow.

"Crews and geotechnical staff will be reassessing the site this afternoon to determine what work may be needed to stabilise it and ensure safety for road users," Mr Connors said.

A further 200 cubic metres of rock fell on the north side of the slip this morning, suspending removal work.

"Crews are continuing to remove rock and soil from the south side of the slip and are trucking it to the West Coast Regional Council's seawall extension at Punakaiki."

Traffic between Greymouth and Westport continues to be detoured through Reefton.
