The mystery of nearly $7000 cash being doled out on to the windscreens of campers at a Mokihinui camping spot in December has been solved.

Campers awoke to find wads of cash amounting to thousands of dollars left under their windscreen wipers and at tent doors at the Gentle Annie Seaside Accommodation and Camping Ground, 58km north of Westport.

Although the gesture looked like a random act of kindness, the campground proprietors gathered up all the money and handed it to police.

Police this week confirmed that they had tracked down the person who had left the money, which had now been returned.

A caller told the Greymouth Star the person was unwell at the time.

"It was just a case of someone going off their medication... and the money has been given back."
