Three hurt, two seriously, in icy collision

Three people were injured - two seriously - in a two-car crash in icy conditions near Makarora last night.

The accident happened about 7.50pm on State Highway 6, the Haast Pass-Makarora Rd, near the Gates of Haast.

Emergency services heading to the scene had to exercise caution while negotiating icy conditions on the north side of the Makarora bridge, a police spokesman said.

They arrived to find found one car upside down and injuries to occupants from both vehicles.

A St John spokesman said two ambulances and two rescue helicopters were dispatched.

Two occupants from the vehicles were found to have serious injuries, while a third person had minor injuries, he said.

The two with serious injuries were to be flown by helicopter to Dunedin Hospital.

It was not known where the third injured person would be taken last night.
