A Southland road will remain closed as crews work to recover a truck that crashed beneath a bridge, the Fiordland Community Board said.

Weir Rd, south of Manapouri, will remain closed all afternoon as unsuitable terrain has hampered efforts to lift the truck from beneath the bridge, the board said in an update shared by the Southland District Council at about 1pm.

The crane would need to be repositioned, the update said.

The road will remain closed all afternoon, and reopen tonight. It would be closed again tomorrow as efforts to remove the truck safely continue, the Community Board said.

The Southland District Council confirmed the crane had arrived at the bridge on Weir Rd about 12.20pm.

When the road re-opens it will be under a 10kmh speed limit, the SDC said.

Motorists were advised to consider taking alternative routes this afternoon.

Emergency services received reports of a single vehicle crash at about 7.20am.

One person was reported to have sustained minor injuries, police said.

The Southland District Council had earlier said the road operated with a 30kmh speed limit throughout the morning, as the crane made its way to the site.
