The Magic (5-1) continued its impressive run of five consecutive victories after beating the Saints (3-3) convincingly in men's A-grade basketball on Saturday.

In a rematch of the opening round fixture, the Magic exacted revenge for its opening round loss, leading from the start and finishing 11 points clear, at 70-59.

A rough first quarter saw both teams struggle to hit shots from outside and neither team managed to hit a three-pointer.

The Magic finished the quarter up 15-7.

Saints and Nuggets player James Ross tried gallantly to mount several comebacks with some impressive skill moves and passes to set his team-mates up, connecting with fellow Nugget Damon Cleverley several times.

Cleverley hit two three-pointers in the second quarter to bring the scores to within three, but it was about as close as the Saints were going to get.

Riki Buckrell once again top-scored for his Magic side, with 16 points, hitting shots when it mattered most.

Team-mate Ben Dick contributed with 13 points, and hit a three-pointer with one minute left to dispel any chance of a Saints comeback.

Earlier the Falcons (5-1) held off Otago Boys High School side (2-4) with a monstrous game from Nugget Sam King.

The Falcons were missing star Tony Wallbutton, but King took over for his side, scoring 28 points with some dominant basketball.

Otago Boys player Chris Hood tried to match up with King, and did well with 20 points, but it was never going to be enough against a physical Falcons side.

University Blue (3-3) continued its hot form with consecutive victories, putting aside the Bombers (0-6) 72-61.

They had to play cohesive team basketball to beat a Bombers side controlled by player Steve Robinson, who had 26 points with some amazing shooting.

Robinson hit three consecutive three-pointers for his side in the first quarter, but his team struggled to contribute, leaving some very frustrated players after six consecutive defeats.

University looks like a team worthy of challenging for the top four this year, as both Campbell Arnott and Adam Dunstan had 12 points.
