Shaun Scott (North East Valley) added to the family bowls heritage when he won the New Zealand Community Trust club singles in Rotorua yesterday.

In the key fifth-round game between the two unbeaten players, Scott (43) beat Richard Collett (Papakura) 21-18 to claim his first national singles title.

Scott joined cousins Terry and Jim, his father, Kevin, and aunt, Noeleen, who had all won national singles titles before him.

Scott had previously been part of a national winning fours team but said that this singles title meant a lot to him.

‘‘My father won a national singles title. I just wanted to keep the family name going,'' he told the Otago Daily Times from Rotorua last night.

Conditions were calm in the early part of the final game against Collett and Scott found his weight early and shot to what looked like an unbeatable 20-8 lead.

But the wind then came up and changed the conditions. Collett picked up his game and kept on scoring.

Scott admitted being worried about Collett's resurgence but knew that if he simply continued to draw shots Collett would eventually miss with a drive.

Scott had been the bridesmaid too many times and desperately wanted the title. ‘‘I always felt in control and was determined not to let this one get past me,'' he said.

But as Collett drew closer at 20-18, Scott was wondering how he was going to finish off the game. He did so with a dead draw with his last bowl and Collett's attempt to drive the shot off missed by the narrowest of margins.

Scott was runner-up in the New Zealand championship singles at Dunedin last year and reached the semifinals in the event at Christchurch this year. He was also runner-up in the national fours this year.

‘‘It was nice to finally win the title,'' Scott said. ‘‘It was a big thrill and a nice way to cap off the season.''

Scott was unbeaten in the 19 singles games that were required to win the final.

He beat New Zealand senior representative Mark Watt to win the Dunedin final, the experienced Bill Clements (Alexandra) to win the zone six regional final and remained unbeaten in five games at the national finals at Rotorua.

The women's title was won by Karen Coombe (Wanganui), who also remained unbeaten after beating Pam Phair (Elmwood, Canterbury) 21-10 in her final game.
