It takes a bit more than that to stop Otago captain Brendon McCullum in his tracks.
On Friday, he was struck by a Brett Lee bouncer which broke his nose in two places and left him needing five stitches to fix up the gash on his face.
A quick patch-up job and the aggressive opener was back in the middle at the Sydney Cricket Ground. His innings did not last long, though. He was undone by former Australian spinner Stuart MacGill.
But he returned to New Zealand to play in Otago's opening HRV Cup against Central Districts yesterday and guided his side to a four-wicket win with a gutsy innings of 79 from 63 deliveries.
"I've got a couple of breaks but nothing in the eye socket which I'm thankful for," McCullum said.
"It was good to get back out there and get back on the horse ... otherwise you sit around and mull over things for too long."
Otago had a nightmare run in the HRV Cup last summer. The Volts lost their opening five games, watched from the sidelines as rain ruined the next four and rounded out a miserable campaign with a three-wicket loss to Wellington.
So, when wicketkeeper Derek de Boorder hit a six from the last ball of the game to seal the win, there was some huge relief in the Otago camp.
It was also a good start for McCullum, who is captaining the twenty/20 side this season.
The first 10 overs were great. The last five overs were terrible with Otago conceding 67 runs.
"I thought the way we started with the ball was outstanding," McCullum said.
"That was probably the reason why we were chasing 150-odd instead of 180.
"But I have some sympathy for our bowlers. It is not easy when you come up against Ross Taylor and he is in that sort of mood."
