Cricket: Dunedin's twilight teams

Twilight cricket numbers in Dunedin have remained much the same in recent years.

There are 29 teams in the Dunedin competition on Monday evenings, up three from last year.

While there were 30 teams in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, Otago Cricket operations manager Tim O'Sullivan said 29 teams was a "great number''.

Each team pays $345 - $43 per person for a team of eight - and has to supply its own gear, including cricket balls.

Each team of eight has a maximum 21 overs to bat, while seven bowlers are limited to three overs each for the fielding side.

Bowlers generally bowl off three to five-pace run-ups.

O'Sullivan said the biggest drawcard for twilight cricket was the fact it was over quickly.

"It's during the week. It's short and sweet, but there's still a serious aspect to it for the competitive sorts,'' he said.

Competition points are collected over the 12 round-robin games, which are drawn at random, before the top four play semifinals.

Matches are always played on artificial wickets, with only Culling Park and Bayfield No1 unavailable, due to club cricket and athletics respectively.

This season's final will be played on March 14.
