Play took until mid-afternoon to get under way in the first test between New Zealand and South Africa at the University Oval in Dunedin.

The Black Caps have won the toss and have elected to field when play started at 2.15pm after a morning of rain delays.

Andrew Ellis will carry the drinks for the Black Caps while South Africa have stuck with the same side which defeated Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in Cape Town in January.

There will be a minimum of 59 overs available.

The match was scheduled to start at 10.30am but overnight rain and showers this morning meant no play was possible. An early lunch was taken at noon.

The forecast is positive for the next few days.
