Cricket: OBHS left with wooden spoon at Gillette Cup

The Otago Boys High School first XI collected the wooden spoon when beaten by St Bedes by seven wickets in the play-off for seventh and eighth spot at the annual Gillette Cup secondary schools competition in Hamilton yesterday.

Otago Boys batted first and scored 188, with Ciaran McMeekan top scoring with 57 and Daniel Duke 21.

St Bedes scored 189 for three with Ken Henry top scoring with 63.

The final was won by Hamilton Boys when it beat Westlake Boys, of Auckland, in a tense game by two wickets.

Westlake Boys College scored 157 for nine, with Hamilton Boys replying with 158 for eight. Scott Kuggeleijn top scored with 36.

Test match fever took priority on Saturday as only one game was played in the club franchise competition. Both the Central Knights and North West suburbs decided to postpone their game until Friday, leaving just one twenty/20 game over the weekend.

An understrength Eastern Beaches side fell 53 runs short of the target of 156 set by the Saddle Hill Steamers.

The Steamers' innings was nicely set up by Otago batsman Hamish Rutherford. His score of 50 came in quick time and set the platform for the middle order. Teen scores through the middle enabled the Steamers to build a respectable total of 156 of their 20 overs.

In reply, the Eastern side - missing some key batsmen - never really threatened the total and crawled to 103 all out.

Mark Joyce was the pick of the Steamers bowlers with three for 19 off four overs.

Saddle Hill Steamers 156 for seven (Hamish Rutherford 50) beat Eastern Beaches 103 (Mark Joyce three for 19) by 53 runs.
