Cricket: Rain expected to disrupt play today

Patchy rain is forecast and there is a chance little play will be possible on the first day of the test between the West Indies and New Zealand at the University Oval today.

This is the view of Dunedin Raineffects hydrologist Dave Stewart, who has predicted a light northeasterly front and a low system to hang around the hills and keep the city wet and cool.

It is better news for tomorrow, with a southerly clearing the air by the end of the morning.

But another cold southerly front is expected to come through late in the afternoon and move through the city early Saturday morning.

Stewart does not expect play to be interrupted on the final three days of the test when there will be a light northeast wind in the city.

"Saturday will be the best day of the test with the wind a little stronger on Sunday," he predicted.

"It will be touch and go on Monday but I don't expect play to be interrupted."

Stewart was adamant there would not be any repeat of the front that hung over the city in 1998 and prevented any play in the test between New Zealand and India.
