Cricket: Volts concede first innings advantage

Otago have been bowled out for 197 against Canterbury today, giving the visitors a two-run first-innings advantage in their Plunket Shield match at the University Oval.

After resuming today on 68 for 2 with Hamish Rutherford and Neil Broom at the crease, Otago wilted under the pressure applied by a steady Canterbury attack.

There were promising starts from Sam Wells (52), Broom (29), Rutherford (33) and Derek de Boorder (32), but a lack of runs from the other Volts batsmen meant the home side failed to capitalise on the good work done by their bowlers in dismissing the Wizards for under 200.

The wickets were shared among the Canterbury bowlers, Willie Lonsdale finishing with 3 for 58.

In other matches, recalled Black Cap Daniel Flynn has continued his recent good form, moving on to 108 to guide the Northern Knights to 330 for 8 against Auckland in Auckland, while play has been abandoned for the day in the match between Wellington and Central in the capital.
