Cricket: Volts meet speedy end

It did not take long for the final rites to be read on Otago's game against Central in Napier yesterday.

Central wrapped up the simplest of 10-wicket victories within about 40 minutes at McLean Park. Resuming on 237 for eight in its second innings, a lead of just 18, Otago lasted just two more overs before being dismissed for 239.

Mark Craig failed to add to his overnight score (20) when he was caught by Jeet Raval off the bowling of Andrew Mathieson.

Jacob Duffy was left eight not out when Blair Soper became Mathieson's fifth victim. It was a maiden five-wicket bag for the 23-year old seamer in his fifth match.

Needing just 21 to win, Central reached the target in the fifth over.

Otago will stay in the North Island to prepare for its next Plunket Shield game, against Auckland.

Rain prevented play yesterday in the Auckland v Wellington match on Eden Park's outer oval, meaning the match finished with Wellington (145 for two) needing another 133 runs to make Auckland bat again and the home side seeking eight wickets for victory.
