Long-serving wicketkeeper Derek de Boorder was voted cricketer of the year at the Otago Cricket Awards last night, while spinner Leigh Kasperek  picked up the other big prize.

After a far from successful summer for the Otago Volts and Otago Sparks, the nine men’s awards were distributed around the Volts.

Wicketkeeper de Boorder, who averaged just under 36 in the Plunket Shield, with a top score of 140, was also voted the Volts batsman of the year.

The bowler of the year was Jacob Duffy, who picked up 29 wickets in the Plunket Shield.

Kasperek was voted Sparks cricketer of the year and also voted bowler of the year.

In the one-day competition she took 19 wickets at an average of 16.63 and was the third-highest wicket-taker in the competition.

Emma Black was voted the rising star for the Sparks and Beth Langston named the fielder of the year. Katey Martin was voted the batsman of the year.

Young Otago top order batsman Shawn Hicks, who had his season ended by a head knock, was voted the Volts rising star.

The Ford Trophy player of the year was bowler Jack Hunter. The Taieri paceman took 12 wickets in the competition at an average of 22.75.

Otago captain Rob Nicol, who ended his season breaking his little finger in his left hand, was named Volts player of the year in the twenty20 competition. He scored 236 runs, at an average of just under 30.

The Plunket Shield plate of the year was shared between Duffy and Michael Rae. Rae improved throughout the season and, like Duffy, picked up 29 wickets in the four-day competition.

Rae also won the outstanding individual performance for his five-wicket bag against Wellington at the University Oval.

Rae started the game as 12th man but was pressed into action when Hicks suffered his concussion. He took the five wickets to skittle Wellington but the Volts still came up short.

Medium pacer Matt Bacon was given the Southern man award.
